Welcome to Year 5 - Our Class Rules

September 4, 2007

We have just been getting used to our new classroom and we have already done some literacy and maths.

We are looking forward to using our class blog and our laptops that we will be seeing soon.

We have just spent some time exploring some class rules with each other. Here is our final set -

>> We will always set an example for younger children in school.
>> We will be careful and responsible when using our class laptops.
>> We will always give our best effort.
>> We will always be respectful of other people’s thoughts and feelings.
>> We will always try to keep our classroom neat and tidy.
>> We will always look after our classroom equipment.
>> We will always be honest and truthful.
>> We will always be kind to our classmates.

This is our set of rules - we hope you have made a similar set in your class. If you have then leave us a comment about them. And let us know what you think of our class rules too?

Scarborough

June 15, 2007

In March we went to Scarborough on our residential. We looked at the site of Holbeck Hall Hotel, which fell into the sea, in 1993 due to the cliff erosion, and we looked at the various sea defences that have been out in place since to prevent and slow down erosion.

We went on the beach and played loads of games for hours, like football, frisby, flew a kite, rugby, made sandcastles, dug trenches and buried people in sand. Mr O’Brien was brutally attacked by several year 5 children and was buried in sand -how rude! We ended the afternoon playing parachute games.

Our hotel, The Green Gables Hotel, was huge, we went swimming played pool, ping pong, snooker, table football and watched Wallace and Gromit on a big screen tv.

The next day we went back into Scarborough to play in the arcades and then we went to The Deep, an Aquarium in Hull, which was awesome, especially going in the glass elevator and getting really close to sharks.

Overall we had a fab time!

Year 5 Update

June 15, 2007

Sorry world we haven’t blogged for so long but we’re back and here are just some of the brilliant things we have been getting up to.

WaterAid Summary

April 4, 2007

What a fantastic unit this has been. The powerpoint presentations were a real success in raising awareness in different year groups and played a massive part in raising money - a huge well done to each year 5 group in Miss James and Mr O’Brien’s class and Miss Jackson’s class for doing such a brilliant job. When we first decided to do some work around a charity we thought it would be great to raise just a small amount of money because we are making a positive contribution to a global issue - however now after all the fundraising money has been collected in we have a raised a final total of a staggering £750 for WaterAid - well done year 5 we are very proud of you.

Pirate Challenge

March 12, 2007

“15 men on a dead man’s chest - Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!” The question is - is it a pirate’s life for you? In order to set sail on the seven seas you need to be sure of the pirate lingo so that you can fit in with any crew on board any ship. Have a go at looking up the following words to see what they mean? Feel free to leave your answers as a comment.

schooner, cutlass, shiver me timbers!, bilge, mast, spyglass port, bow, starboard, stern, rigging, swab, landlubber, buccaneer, booty, doubloons, heave to, hornswaggle

Ahoy there Shipmates

March 12, 2007

This week we have been looking at the classic story of Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stevenson. We have created our own Pirates through drama (even having a visit from Pirate Pegleg Pete), designed clothes and sorted our captains out with a ship and deadly crew ready to set sail. Using the features of narrative writing we have become Jim Hawkins and the master pirate Long John Silver, adding new scenes and writing extra swash buckling adventures.

Elvis has entered the building!

March 12, 2007

Year 5 have got a very special visitor for the next few weeks and are really giving ‘The King’ the V.I.P treatment. Elvis is Mr O’Brien’s very own goldfish and he has brought him into Priestsic to say hello. Mr O’Brien has looked after Elvis since 2000 and really wanted the children in his class to meet him. In an exclusive interview Elvis said, “I’m enjoying life in Year 5, the children have made me feel so welcome and they feed my big appetite. I like my new ‘bowl’ mates Shadow Phantom and Sparkle Girl and I’m sure we’ll have a groovy time”, then with an extra cool, curled lip he gave a ‘wink and the gun’ and said “Thank you very much!”

WaterAid Booklets

We have finished our booklets and they are now ready to go home and support our sponsorship forms. The information that we have included is:

What is WaterAid? What is the problem? Where is the problem? How is WaterAid helping? How can we help?

Our sponsored event

To help raise money for WaterAid we have organised a sponsored swimming event at our local pool. We are being sponsored for the number of widths we can swim in 15 minutes.

We are also organising a Matchbox competition for the whole school. The aim is to fit as many items in a single, standard sized matchbox as possible, e.g. pebble, grain of rice, marble, etc. It will cost 30p to enter. There is also a prize for the winner.

Powerpoint presentations

We have, in groups, produced a slideshow presentation to show other year groups, from Foundation to Year 6, and provide information to them about WaterAid.

Priestsic in a Winter Wonderland

February 12, 2007

Last Friday Year 5, along with the rest of the school, made the most of the snow with an extra, extra long playtime. We had lots of fun as we made snowmen, snow shapes and had a snowball fight (strictly no head shots!). It was a brilliant start to the weekend. Did anyone else in Cyberspace have snow?
